The stand-alone system will charge your batteries and power any load you have on your critical load panel. It can't push excess power to the
grid so there will be some watts lost. However, these systems cost less than their counterparts. In general, if the grid is available and the
connection is relatively easy to make, we recommend the grid-tie system.
System #5 is a basic system that powers a few 12 volt lights and charges your hand-held flash-lights, radios, and tools. You can add a small
inverter and a larger battery to power some small 120 volt appliances.
Like the stand-alone system, the grid-tie system will always charge the batteries first. Any excess power goes first to the critical load panel and
then to your main panel where it will power your other loads. If you don't use it, the utility "buys" it from you. (Yes, your meter may actually turn
backwards.) As such, you will use every watt the grid-tie system produces or sell it to the utility. However, don't expect to get a check from the
power company. Your emergency system will lower your bill but not eliminate it.
When the grid goes down, this advantage disappears and this system will operate just like a stand-alone.
I will add links to the load sheets of each system later. If you are interested in sizing a system for your specific needs, please call or email and I'll
be glad to provide this information.
This page shows actual emergency power systems, both grid-tie and stand-alone. These systems use deep-cycle batteries to power your loads
when the sun is not shining. As long as the grid is up, your batteries will be charged most of the time. So, when the sun is shining, the system
can provide power to the critical load panel or, in the case of a grid-tie system, to the grid via your main panel.
Grid gone? Either system will meet your needs when the grid is out. In fact, when the grid goes down, it will not make any difference which
system you have.
All are designed to meet the owner's specific load requirements and will power these loads for three days without sun. If the sunless days
persist, you may have to use your generator to charge the batteries. On the other hand, if the sun is shining and the batteries are charged, you
can operate other appliances. Some contain DC refrigerators and/or freezers and these appliances are included with the system.
